| Botox® is a protein complex that interferes with muscle contraction. It temporarily blocks nerve stimulation of muscles where it is injected, so that muscle contraction is weakened or inhibited. Botox® has been safely used for many years to treat spasms of the muscles that move the eye (strabismus) and uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm). In 2002 it was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, and since that time it has been marketed as Botox® Cosmetic.
Many facial wrinkles and creases are active lines caused by muscle contraction, which can be blocked by Botox® injection. The effect is temporary, usually lasting 3 to 6 months. With repeated injection, the effect may regularly last up to 5 or 6 months. Although some wrinkles and creases may completely disappear (temporarily), it is important to understand that some may improve but not completely disappear. Some people (very few) are resistant to Botox® and achieve little or no response.
Where does Botox® work the best? - Areas of the face that respond well include 'crow's feet' lines around the eyes, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, and horizontal ('worry') lines on the forehead. Botox® can also be administered just below the lateral aspect of the eyebrow to produce a temporary lateral brow lift, which opens up and brightens the eyes.
In some instances, Botox® can be used to soften vertical upper and lower lip lines, to reduce muscle bands in the anterior neck, and even elevate the nasal tip.
Some people experience excessive underarm sweating called hyperhydrosis. This excess can lead to embarrassment and stains on clothing. It causes some people to avoid public speaking and to limit their wardrobes.
Botox® Therapy can be used to control excessive sweating. Botox® therapy works by blocking the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands under the arms. It can reduce 90% of the sweat produced by these glands. It does not cause muscle weakness when injected under the arms. It is injected with a tiny needle just underneath the skin, similar to how a TB test would be injected. Multiple injections are required at spaced intervals to fully cover the whole surface that is responsible for sweating. We locate the active sweat glands with a protocol that uses iodine and cornstarch so expect the procedure to be a little messy. It takes from 30 minutes to an hour. Typically, the results take effect within 2 weeks. The treatment will continue to provide underarm dryness for 6 months to 16 months depending on the individual.

Restylane ® is a naturally-occurring injectable agent that is used for lip enhancement and to soften facial lines and creases. It was approved by the FDA for the treatment of lines and creases around the mouth and nose in December 2003.
Common signs of lower facial aging include thinning of the lips, deepening of the nasolabial folds (a crease from the outer side of the nostril to the corner of the mouth), and the development of 'marionette' lines (running vertically downward from the corners of the mouth). These features can in many cases be instantly and dramatically improved by the injection of soft tissue filling materials such as Restylane ®. The injection of Restylane ® can also improve some depressed scars, vertical lines around the mouth, and other facial soft tissue abnormalities.
Restylane ® does not carry the risk of allergic reaction that is associated with bovine (cow) collagen, so no skin test is required. It does not contain any material that does not naturally occur in soft tissues, such as hydroxyapetite or methylmethacrylate, which can result in granuloma (cyst) formation and chronic inflammation. Be VERY wary of injectable agents that contain materials that do not naturally occur in soft tissues, as the risk of these complications is often minimized to patients.
