Skin Needling is a procedure used to correct
- Scarring
- Lines and wrinkles
- Sun-damaged skins
- Thin, Crepey skin
The procedure uses multiple needles < 0.25mm in diameter, to pierce the skin and create tiny injuries deep in the skin. A topical anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure to prevent pain and discomfort.
The dermal injuries cause the skin to repair itself by stimulating new collagen formation. Skin Needling perforates and softens fibrous scar tissue which enables the deposition of new collagen. New collagen will fill depressed scars and wrinkles from the bottom up lifting skin depressions so they are level with the surrounding skin. This process takes 2-3 months to produce visible results and can also help thicken thin, crepey skin.
Each skin responds differently and may require multiple treatments at 6-8 week intervals, dependent on the initial condition being treated, and the desired outcome. This time frame allows us to see the maximum new collagen deposition and to assess the success of the treatment.
Immediately after treatment patients usually experience mild to moderate redness and sensitivity in the treated area lasting 12 to 48 hours.
Post-treatment:
- Swelling and bruising may occur for 2-3 days
- Dry and tight skin
- Tiny crusted areas occur all over that feel slightly rough and give a tanned appearance
- Varying amounts of flaking and /peeling occur about 3 days after your treatment
- Keep skin moist will improve appearance and assist in faster peeling
- Makeup maybe applied to the areas after 48 hours
- After peeling process skin has a healthy glow, feels softer, smoother and is more even in color
- It is important to protect the new skin from the sun by using a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily
Potential complications
- If post-treatment care is not followed it may hinder the healing process and possibly lead to infection or scarring
- Possible herpes simplex outbreak if prone to cold sores - an antiviral medication will be prescribed prior to procedure
- Hyperpigmentation (darker areas of pigment on the skin) lasting 1 to 12 months
Each Skin Needling treatment will vary in cost according to the size of the treatment area. Skin needling takes approximately 30 - 45 minutes to complete
